Australian Crawl

This is classic Aussie Rock, I arranged it around 10 years ago, this is a re-recording with better gear. You are looking at the last of 3 takes, and includes a few errors punched out, there are a few things still in there that aren't "perfect" but I let them through.  Listening back there are a few bits I need to rework. I've been playing it so long that it has morphed somewhat and I can see I've dropped some of the trickier resolves. Laziness! Good to have recorded it again then to see it and hear it!

It's drop D tuning, love that big bottom D. Needed to restring before I recorded this, oh well, sorry. The tone is lacking a certain crispness. Strings aren't fully dead, but they don't have the crispy punch anymore.

As part of the key features of this arrangement I throw in a "snare drum feel" with my middle and ring finger, while my index finger lets the melody ring. I quite like the sound of that, it's not something I do in many songs, which has made this arrangement one of my favourites.

Yes to Stairway! All guitarists have tried this, and I have dabbled with bits and pieces of it for more than 30 years.  But now, finally, I have stopped dabbling and actually made a full arrangement and recorded it!

No solo, sorry.  I had put one together which captured its essence, but it was just so hard and so much work.  It would also be super-difficult to keep fresh in my head. Since I prefer to be able to play a lot of songs well rather than a few songs brilliantly, I dropped it.

This recording is many play throughs over the course of an hour and a half until my left hand was starting to give out.  I only really got through the entire 7 minutes adequately twice, so yes - this is actually a full play through, not camera trickery - but I edited out the misses and buzzes in the audio from other takes, just so it sounds more like what I'm trying to put out.  There are still plenty of errors in there, don't worry, still human.

Unfortunately when I set up my two mics I didn't get the levels right on one and I found at the end it was clipping a lot.  Rather than just throw it out, I decided to keep the clean microphone recording nice and clean, and I heavily reverbed the clipped one and put it underneath. You don't notice the clipping but the reverb gives it a nice spatial expansion.  Even better would have been if I used a different take for the reverb channel, but, I only have so much time to commit to this on my Australia Day!

After recently doing a full cover of this I noticed there were some improvements I could make to my solo instrumental fingerstyle arrangement.  This is them. I was loving working the D chord over an F# bass, and the subtleties I had been missing for years in the melody.  So good!  Nothing like a deeper dive into a song.  Not quite ready to work in the middle and ending solos though, this is still "a basic version" :-)

Very tough session to record. This was take 4 and it had a lot of errors, but was close enough, so I replayed a few parts off camera while the mics were still rolling and punched about 8 fixers in. And you can hear that I was fatigued because I was missing the pinky hammer on in the riff almost every time. I should play it as a plucked note but it sounds so mechanical when I do.

"Frustrated Perfectionist."  11 years since I last recorded this, and it definitely needed an update for the tab.
