Studying Jimi is a lot of fun.  You always learn something new.  He realized how easy it was to play very cool fills if he played in the key of F (see note at end about different tunings).  He uses that key quite a bit and may be the reason he wrote "The Wind Cries Mary" in the key of F.  When you use the second pattern of the minor pentatonic scale starting on the first fret (F), the notes fall neatly on the neck so you can use the open A, D, and G strings to your advantage.  It is the F Maj pentatonic scale (1st Position) and also the 2nd position of the D Min. Pentatonic scale.  

This commentary assumes you are in standard tuning.  In this video, I am actually tuned down a whole step to D.  Jimi played in either standard E, 1/2 step down to Eb, and a whole step down to D.  I wish I knew what made him pick a certain tuning at a concert.
